Murder at Gulls Nest

by Jess Kidd

Atria/Simon & Schuster

All of Jess Kidd’s novels have wonderfully different people in them. This is no exception – you meet her seriously quirky characters and can’t help but fall under their spells. It’s difficult to want any of them to be guilty of murder, but…

If you haven't tried Kidd's other books - Himself  is my favorite by just a feather. Mr. Flood's Last Resort, Things in Jars and The Night Ship are also wonderful.

Twist

by Colum McCann

Random House

There is so much here -  love, regret, free diving, the struggle to write, a mid-life crisis, our  dependence on the internet, and friendships. Connections human and otherwise dominate this story.

Written with quietly building tension there is a sense of incompletion which must be as the author intended and as it can only be.

    This will leave you thinking.

Wild Dark Shore

by Charlotte McConaghy

Flatiron Books/ Macmillan

This is an engrossing and moving tale of family, fear and attempts to save as much as can be saved in a rapidly changing world. The characters are portrayed as very human, flawed and loving.

McConaghy's other books are also well done; this may be her best yet.
