The Hare with Amber Eyes (Illustrated Edition)

by Edmund de Waal

FSG/Macmillan

In this time of rising anti-semitism, this book reminds us of the horror it can come to and all that is lost in such hatred.

This is a  family story of  art, commerce and movement, over hundreds of years. With wonderfully drawn characters who come alive in all their foibles, romances and fears.

You want the illustrated edition as the photos are great additions to the story.

Exit Zero } Stories

by Marie-Helene Bertino

FSG Originals / Macmillan

Strange, funny, warm, loving and more than slightly frightening, these stories are wonderful. They each magically create their own distinct improbable but completely believable worlds.

A great bedside book, 'though you may need to keep the lights on for a couple of the stories.

The Left Hand of Darkness

by Ursula K. Le Guin

Ace/PRH

Most books I borrow from the library. This one I will have to buy as I do want to read it again, maybe several times. Le Guin creates a world piece by small piece, so that you feel the cold and snow and the characters' attempts to stay warm. And most importantly their attempts and need to understand each other. You will think about this book long after the last page.

The Spinning Heart

by Donal Ryan

Steerforth/PRH

Ideally, you would read this before Heart, Be at Peace, but it's as wonderful after. The warmth and strength of the characters and their stories is moving even if, or maybe especially if, you've seen them older and in some cases perhaps wiser.

This is a beautiful series - don't miss it.
