Shutter

by Ramona Emerson
Soho Crime, Penguin Random House Publisher Services

Rita Todacheene is a forensic photographer working for the police in Albuquerque. Not the perfect job for a Navajo due to their traditional discomfort with the dead. Rita has an additional issue as she also becomes haunted quite easily by those dead who want her help.

There is a recent piece in The New Yorker regarding styles of thinking ("Thought Process" by Joshua Rothman). Could it be that people who think visually see things that not everyone can.

The murder mystery is well aligned with the story of Rita's upbringing both on and off the reservation.

I hope this will be the beginning of a series as even the peripheral characters - her friends, family and co-workers -  are so well written that you want to know more about them.
